The Kozelsky is an extinct dilapidated volcano 2190 m high that is situated 30 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The Kozelsky is located to the right of the Avachinsky Volcano if looking from the city, and is considered to be a “domestic” volcano. This is the closest to the Pacific Ocean volcano, one can see the coast of Kamchatka from its summit. Once the Kozelsky reached the height of 2700 meters and stood even with the Avachinsky, but powerful eruptions destroyed its top and formed 3 summits — Kupol (Dome), Zoob (Tooth) and Vostochnaya (Eastern). In summer the volcano is interesting for its vast slag fields and a glacier in the crater. There are also some mountaineering routes. As soon as the slopes become covered with snow mountain skiers and snowboarders assemble at the Kozelsky. There is a ski training base with a bar lift situated on the slope at the altitude of 850 m. You’ll be taken to the untouched slopes of the volcano by snowmobiles. The descent is quite steep — 35 degrees, while the trails are 4–6 km long.
